BROCKTON, Mass. — FBI statistics show that Brockton’s crime rate is down.

Recently, Plymouth County Prosecutor Timothy Cruz advised Brockton City Council that major crime statistics in the city have been declining for years.

All violent crime in Brockton has decreased by 20% over the past seven years.

And shootings in the city have fallen by 35%, with the number of victims falling by 26% over the same period.

For Brockton Police, this is a very positive trend.

“There is still a lot of work to do. These numbers are good, we’re not going to say they’re the best. But we love the work our men and women do,” Brockton Police Department spokesman Darren Duarte said.

Beyond the crime rate, the incarceration rate in Plymouth County is also dropping dramatically.

Since 2012, there have been 79% fewer inmates at Plymouth County Reformatory,

And there are nearly 50% fewer active inmates from the Department of Correction.

“About 4 weeks ago the number of people serving time in the Plymouth County Reformatory was 79. Seventy-nine people,” DA Cruz said. “The good people are in prison. You focus your resources on the small majority of people who commit the majority of the crime. When you focus on them and remove them from the equation, you will see the numbers go down.

Timothy Cruz, DA of Plymouth County, tells me that community programs like the Safe Streets Initiative have a major impact because they bring together different agencies to help identify and help at-risk children and victims of domestic violence. It also helps former inmates rebuild their lives after incarceration.

“Unfortunately when you look around the country right now you see crime soaring to unprecedented levels in major urban communities. So when you look here in the town of Brockton in County Plymouth, we’ve seen our numbers are going down because I think we’re doing smart things on both sides,” DA Cruz said.
