Sensing the backlash that greeted his recent meeting with some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to allegedly dissolve the party’s leadership from constituency to state level to accommodate his loyalists who came from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki reportedly retreated.

It was gathered that he met with the State Working Committee (SWC) of the PDP again at the Government House in Benin-ville recently.

The state PDP SWC recently wrote to the national leadership of the party protesting an alleged plot to dissolve the party leadership from the ward, local government area to the state level, and also complains about the delay in appointing commissioners.

In the letter to the party’s national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, the state PDP alleged that Obaseki was misled by three categories of party people whom they identified as contenders for the 2023 and 2024 elections. ; party members who lost at party congresses and godfathers who they say came with the APC governor to the PDP but refused to register with the party (PDP) in their neighborhoods.

A source close to the venue said: “But with the meeting reportedly taking place last Wednesday evening, the tension may
have been reduced to a reasonable level.

At the meeting, as reliably collected, the governor reportedly expressed his displeasure with the SWC’s stance which he said was “too tough” for him. He allegedly told them that contrary to the insinuation, he would not take them. for granted and that he remained grateful to the PDP for giving him the platform for re-election after falling out with his old party, the APC.

The governor reportedly told SWC members led by Dr Anthony Aziegbemie that he was getting calls from fellow governors across the country and business associates, who feared he was falling out with the party that brought him back in power. so early.

According to the source who wished to remain anonymous, “The meeting was cordial. He was summoned by the governor where he appealed for calm. He told us that he had received calls from all over the country at subject of development.

“The meeting ended well and he wants us to provide our suggestions on the way forward, which should be passed on to him on Friday (today).”
