Kanpur: Six members of the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) working committee were unanimously selected after a minor drama.
The election to fill the six seats on the working committee was to take place on Wednesday evening. Everything was settled but a candidate from the Samajwadi party submitted his candidacy which prompted the leaders to stand for election. Corporal SP subsequently withdrew his candidacy and the six members were unanimously elected.
The six elected members are Manoj Rathore, Nirmal Mishra, Prashant Shukla and Saurav Dev (all from BJP), Mohd Amir (Congress) and Abhishek Gupta Monu (Samajwadi Party.
Among the six members, four belong to the BJP, one to the Congress and one to the Samajwadi Party. According to sources, the corporators worked out a formula according to which the six candidates had to be selected unanimously, but at the start of the procedure, Corporator SP Manoj Pandey announced that he would contest the election of a member of the working committee.
His announcement failed to elect the unanimously selected members without an election. Pandey alleged that Abhishek Gupta is working on two positions – he is the head of the party corporators in the house and also the district general secretary of the party, therefore he should not contest the election. Abhishek Gupta countered by saying that Pandey was not in the party and therefore he had no right to contest the election on the symbol of the Samajwadi party. Witnessing the situation, the BJP chose another corporator to present him as a candidate. Previously, according to the formula, it was decided that the BJP would field four candidates.
When Manoj Pandey withdrew his candidacy, the election of six members took place unanimously. The terms of Raghvendra Mishra, Deepak Sharma, Girish Chandra, Rashid Mahmood, Arpit Yadav and Amandeep Singh as members of the working committee have expired.
After the constitution of the working committee, the chamber would be called upon to present the budget for the current financial year.
