Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Monday convened a session of the party’s highest decision-making body – the Congress Working Committee – to consider the results of the big old party’s polls in the assembly elections just held. to end.

In recent polls, Congress failed to return to power in Kerala and Assam and was wiped out in West Bengal. He also lost in Pondicherry.

In Kerala, the Congress at least held its own, losing a single seat from 2016 to finish with 41. The left front scored a landslide victory claiming 99 seats and also bucked a four-decade trend by winning consecutive terms. The BJP did not win any seats.

Considered a Congress stronghold until its breakthrough in 2016, Congress did slightly better in Assam, winning 29 of the 95 seats it contested. But the opposition alliance failed to challenge the BJP, winning just 50 seats to the ruling party’s 75.

In Tamil Nadu, the party was part of the winning DMK-led alliance and performed relatively better, winning 18 of the 25 allocated seats.

Congress failed to return to power in Pondicherry – where its government crashed days before the poll – after the NR Congress-BJP pair won 16 of 30 seats.

In Bengal, where Congress forged an alliance with the left, the two parties failed to win a single seat. By contrast, Trinamool won their biggest win with 213 seats to BJP’s 77.

Over the past year, a group of party leaders, including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma and Kapil Sibal, have stressed the need for soul-searching on the persistent poor performance in elections and called for “full time” and “visible” to take the side. cheeky.
