Following a vulnerability in its smart contract LAND, The Sandbox has deployed a new version of the smart contract. Apparently, the vulnerability was first reported on December 25, 2021. Existing users will now need to migrate their LAND to the new LAND contract. But it does not cost users anything. In other words, The Sandbox will cover all gas costs involved.
What was the vulnerability of The Sandbox LAND?
According to a blog post per The Sandbox, the vulnerability prevented transferring and hitting new LANDs. However, the company reiterated that the issues do not compromise any tokens.
“The vulnerability has been fixed and the patch audited,” added The Sandbox. “It has not been exploited by any malicious users and is now secure. Additionally, we have thoroughly investigated our other smart contracts and none of them are at risk.
In fact, The Sandbox claimed that two major security companies, Certik and Solidified, thoroughly audited “its smart contracts. In addition, the contracts had also received “high security ratings”. Cetik notably audited The Sandbox’s LAND smart contract in December 2019 over a two-week process. However, a year later, a security researcher, Danel Hazlewood discovered the vulnerability.
“Upon becoming aware of the vulnerability, we took immediate action to resolve the issue,” the company added. After consulting with developers, it rolled out the new smart contract on January 28. Additionally, The Sandbox has deployed several security measures to protect all LANDs during the migration process. On the same day, the company also released a new migration interface. All LAND owners can use this interface to migrate their tokens to the new contract.
In addition to a gasless function, the migration is unlimited in time. This means that users can take their time migrating their LAND tokens.
