The main opposition party, the Nepalese Congress, convened its central working committee meeting on Saturday to discuss the government’s registered constitution amendment proposal.

Earlier this week, the government registered the proposed amendment to update the country’s political map in the national emblem.

Although tabling the proposal was on the agenda for Wednesday’s parliament meeting, it was later withdrawn.

Congress opposed the withdrawal and attempted to blame him for the action.

Party spokesman Bishow Prakash Sharma told the Post that the meeting will discuss the proposed constitution regarding updating the new political map of Nepal in the national emblem, set out in Schedule 3 of the constitution. All members of the party office, members of the central work committee and invited members of the central work will attend the meeting, according to Sharma.

The meeting is expected to take a decision on the party’s position on the proposed constitution amendment that was registered five days ago.

At a multi-party meeting on Tuesday, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba assured his party was in favor of the proposed constitutional amendment. But given the sensitivity of the issue, it should be discussed and approved by the party’s Central Working Committee, he said.

Party leaders, however, say Congress didn’t mean the proposal shouldn’t be tabled.

After the proposal was taken off the House agenda, Congress on Wednesday night objected to the act and questioned the ruling party’s motive.

“The attention of the Nepalese Congress has been drawn to the removal of the proposed constitution amendment from the likely agenda of the May 27 meeting,” the Congress said.

“Our serious attention has been drawn to the fact of removing from the agenda such an issue as the amendment of the constitution, for which initiatives should have been taken to bring together the government, the opposition and other parties in parliament and then blame the main opposition for it,” the statement read. “The Nepalese Congress Parliamentary Party condemns such action and calls on the government to act in national unity.”
