Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee set up a new 20-member national working committee on Saturday and dissolved the previous one formed in 2017, dropping some prominent names.

On February 2, Banerjee was re-elected party chairman. Until she decides on the new officers of the national working committee, she will be the only member of the office at the national level.

“After being re-elected as party chairman, Banerjee had appointed six party leaders who made the decisions to run the party. On Saturday, Banerjee met with the leaders and the new committee was formed. The officers will be appointed by Banerjee later,” said Partha Chatterjee, Minister and State Secretary General of TMC.

The new national working committee includes Amit Mitra, Abhishek Banerjee, Anubrata Mondol, Arup Biswas, Asima Patra, Bulu Chik Baraik, Chandrima Bhattacharya, Subrata Bakshi, Partha Chatterjee, Firhad Hakim, Goutam Deb, Jyotipriyo Mullick, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Rajesh Tripathi , Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, Sudip Banerjee, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Moloy Ghatak and Yashwant Sinha.

Prominent names who appeared on the previous list but were removed from the new list released on Saturday include TMC MPs Derek O Brien and Saugata Roy. The 2017 roster included Suvendu Adhikari. He joined the BJP in December 2020 ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections.

O’Brien and Roy could not be reached for comment.

The move comes amid internal rumors about the “one man, one job” policy. The party had adopted the policy during its organizational reshuffle last year. Abhishek Banerjee, TMC supremo’s nephew and heir apparent has been a strong advocate for politics.

Abhishek was included in the previous working committee and in June 2021, he was appointed National General Secretary of the TMC. His post was also dissolved along with the previous working committee.

Some TMC leaders, considered close to Abhishek Banerjee, had openly advocated “one person, one position”, while the party’s old guard accused them of violating party discipline. On Friday, posts appeared on social media tagged #OneManOnePost. A counter-campaign was also launched with the hashtag “Sesh Kotha Didi Bolbe (Didi will say the last word)”.

The BJP, however, criticized the ruling party saying that the TMC has only one position and the others are irrelevant.

“The TMC only has one position. The rest is unimportant. The party is collapsing because of its internal proliferation. Planned efforts are underway to project a particular leader. Perhaps this entire episode was staged to distract from other important issues. It is not a party but a family affair,” said Sukanta Majumdar, Chairman of the BJP in West Bengal.

Asked to comment on whether any discussions took place at the meeting about the ‘one man, one post’ policy and whispers about the perceived power struggle, Firhad Hakim, Minister of State, echoed what he told the media on Friday.

“The ‘one-man-one-post’ campaign is not endorsed by the TMC. No one should confuse anyone on social media. It is a crime. While enacting the policy, he also “It was mentioned that the party president can change it if needed. She was re-elected president again (in the recent organizational poll). She will call a meeting and formulate a new policy,” Hakim previously told the media.

The executives, however, were tight-lipped about whether any discussion took place over TMC’s contract with I-PAC.

Uncertainty continues over Trinamool Congress (TMC) contract with I-PAC, once led by Prashant Kishore, with party leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee saying days ago that the termination of his contract with I-PAC was an “internal affair”. Of the party. I-PAC said it does not control TMC’s social media pages.
