Longview City Council has voted to suspend the effective dates for rate increases proposed by two natural gas providers.

Atmos Energy and CenterPoint Energy submitted the requested rate increases on February 25 and March 3, respectively, to the Texas Railroad Commission.

Atmos’ proposal would see monthly residential bills increase by 16.6%, while commercial customers would see increases of more than 20%.

CenterPoint is asking for a more modest rate increase of 7.8% for residential customers and a 6.4% increase for small business customers.

The board agreed Thursday to suspend Atmos’s proposed effective date of April 26-June 10 and CenterPoint’s request of May 2-June 16 so the city can assess whether rate application data and calculations of both companies are correct.

“While the city’s ability to review and modify Atmos Energy’s requested increase is limited, the city should exercise due diligence with respect to rate increases for monopoly utilities that operate within its boundaries, including including increases requested under the (Gas Reliability Infrastructure Program) statute to ensure compliance with the requirements of this law,” according to city information.

As part of the process of increasing rate applications, the city will also continue to participate in a coalition of cities known as Atmos Texas Municipalities and the Alliance of CenterPoint Municipalities.

In other business Thursday, Mayor Andy Mack proclaimed April 8 as Longview PRCA Rodeo Day on behalf of the Longview Greggton Rotary Club and April 9 as Family Fun Day for Autism Awareness in Longview.

Alice Coleman and Anitra Anderson of Positive People with Positive Attitudes, a local autism support group, attended the council meeting.

“Without awareness, we can never fully understand the condition,” Mack said as he presented the proclamation to Coleman and Anderson.

Members of the Longview Greggton Rotary Club were also present at the meeting to accept the proclamation.

“(The rodeo) doesn’t come without a lot of hard work, and that hard work comes from you, ladies and gentlemen, and I appreciate your efforts because it’s an event that helps Longview gain recognition,” Mack said. “People come from all over the country to participate and watch it.”
