EVANSVILLE, Indiana (WEHT) – The United Way of Southwest Indiana (UWSI) teams up with Ivy Tech Evansville Community College to fund two uncredited programs. Funding for the programs is provided by UWSI’s Empowering Employment Grant.

The programs offered by Ivy Tech and covered by UWSI will be Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A) and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC). Eligible individuals can obtain certification for these two programs for a flat fee of $500.

$84,000 was awarded to Ivy Tech to provide scholarships and work placements for participants of these two programs through Ivy Tech’s IvyBridges program. IvyBridges was created to help unemployed or underemployed community members living in Vanderburgh County get the certification they need for employment.

“We are thrilled that United Way has allocated this funding to Ivy Tech to help people in our community,” said Ivy Tech Evansville Chancellor Daniela Vidal. “These professions are in great need of more skilled people, and Ivy Tech’s programming and four-week non-credit internships will get these students on their feet quickly.”

Ivy Tech will offer participants a fixed enrollment rate, four-week certification, and on-the-job training for four weeks after completing their CDL or HVAC course.

  • CDL classes begin March 7 and are held on the Evansville campus from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for four weeks.
  • HVAC classes begin May 2 and are held on the Evansville campus from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for four weeks.
  • All classes are held Monday through Friday and enrollment will continue throughout the year.

The IvyBridges program will provide students with the full support of Ivy Tech services. These services include access to the free on-campus meals program, food pantry, free mental health care, tutoring services, transportation assistance, priority childcare provided by on-campus daycare, Ivy Tech campus, the Ivy Tech fitness center, financial literacy training and emergency financial assistance.

Career coaching and employer connection (CCEC) will also provide training and preparation to students for job interviews and help them find jobs.
