A steering group consisting of Westmeath County Council Cathaoirleach, Cllr Frankie Keena, Athlone Chamber of Commerce CEO, Gerry McInerney and John Henson will host a public meeting at The Bounty on Monday 1 November at 8.45pm, the focus of which will be to establish a working committee to oversee the running of the Croi na hEireann festival in March 2022 to coincide with St. Patrick’s Day.

“The March 2020 Covid-19 lockdown forced the last minute cancellation of all events including the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It is now hoped to re-establish a group to coordinate the various events and parades that would make up the festival 2022 .

“It is so important to sincerely thank all of the former St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committees who have volunteered their time over the years to organize parades for Athlone. public.

“We are now looking for like-minded people who want to get involved in organizing and rolling out this festival next March. This is an opportunity for all of Athlone to deliver a ‘wow’ parade and festival to remember for Athlone,” said Cllr Keena. .

John Henson, who helped bring large numbers of Americans from Providence to Athlone for the 2019 St. Patrick’s Day Parade, has stated his desire to see this festival grow more and more.

“We are looking for members of the public to share their views with us, come up with new ideas and get involved in putting on a fantastic festival and parade on St. Patrick’s Day weekend of the year. next,” Mr. Henson commented.

Athlone Chamber of Commerce CEO Gerry McInerney stressed the importance of providing a St Patrick’s Day festival weekend in Athlone next year.

“The Chamber fully supports this initiative because, in addition to providing great public enjoyment, it will provide an economic boost to local businesses,” added Mr. McInerney.

Issues to be decided at the meeting will include the establishment of an official committee, to decide on the date and theme of the 2022 St. Patrick’s Day Parade and finally ways to generate funds for the festival.

The steering committee looks forward to welcoming all who are interested in organizing a parade and festival worthy of Athlone next year.
