Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa’s Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) working committee is meeting today (24) to expel MPs Harin Fernando and Manusha Nanayakkara for crossing over and joining the government, the SJB MP said yesterday Mujibur Rahuman.

The SJB suspended Fernando and Nanayakkara’s membership shortly after he accepted ministerial posts in the Cabinet under the multi-party caretaker government formed by new Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe under President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

According to Rahuman, the current cabinet includes members of Sri Lanka MP Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) led by Basil Rajapaksa, except for Harin Fernando and Manusha Nanayakkara. They’ve been there since the SJB.

MPs Nimal Siripala De Silva and Mahinda Amaraweera, who moved to the government of former President Maithripala Sirisena led by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), will also face disciplinary action for joining the government against the decision of party to accept ministerial portfolios. Rahuman said that Amaraweera and Nimal Siripala De Siva ran under the SLPP ticket in the parliamentary elections, and are therefore linked to that party, the SLPP.

“Therefore, their presence in the government cannot be considered as belonging to any party other than the ruling SLPP, so it can be called a multi-party interim government,” he stressed.
