The Congressional Working Committee (CWC) will meet virtually on Saturday to discuss the second wave of COVID-19, party sources confirmed on Tuesday.

Internal party polls to elect a president by June could also be discussed. However, the prospect of holding a congressional session or a mass rally in the current scenario looks difficult.

The party’s highest decision-making body will convene exactly a week after Congress Speaker Sonia Gandhi met with the chief ministers of the party-ruled states and senior ministers from the governments of Maharashtra and Jharkhand where the Congress is a part. of the ruling alliance.

Besides Maharashtra, Congress-governed Punjab and Chhattisgarh are also among the states that have seen a sharp rise in cases.

On Monday, Ms Gandhi wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in which she called on the government to open up vaccination by giving clearance to all candidate vaccines or vaccines that are used in other countries.

She also suggested that vaccines should be given to those who need them based on their exposure rather than the current age criterion.

“While it will be necessary on the one hand to significantly increase our national production capacity, it will also be prudent to authorize the emergency use authorization of all candidate vaccines that have the required authorizations, without further delay. . Accordingly, with increased availability, categories eligible for vaccination should be expanded based on need and exposure rather than simply age,” Ms Gandhi had mentioned in her letter.

“In the same vein, numbers assigned to a state should be based on the prevalence and projection of infection in that particular state,” she added, noting that some states don’t have vaccines. available only for three to five days.

As several state governments have started reimposing stricter COVID norms and movement restrictions, Ms Gandhi called on Mr Modi to consider implementing a guaranteed minimum monthly income scheme of ₹6,000 for each eligible family . The Congress leader also requested exemption from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for all equipment, instruments and drugs used in the fight against the pandemic.
