Renewed calls for the overhaul of the party structure.

Renewed calls for the overhaul of the party structure.

The Congress working committee will meet on Monday to consider the reasons behind its below par performance in the Assembly elections in Kerala, West Bengal, Assam and Pudducherry.

In Kerala, where former party chairman Rahul Gandhi spent several days campaigning, the party was reduced to 21 seats, one less than its 2016 tally. The party’s vote share, however, fell from 23 .8% in 2016 to 25.1%.

In Assam, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who has been appointed as a special observer, has spent much of his time campaigning and training cadres. Congress expected to be able to close the gap with the BJP and might even have a real chance of winning. However, he managed to better his tally of 26 in 2016 by just three seats.

In West Bengal he failed to open his account with ally CPI(M) and in Pondicherry the party was wiped out.

Sections of the party, now known as the G-23, the group of leaders who wrote to Congresswoman Sonia Gandhi demanding reforms in the functioning of the party, have once again expressed the need for a urgent overhaul of the party apparatus. Many members pointed out that the party cannot simply rejoice in the defeat of the BJP.
