Congress can’t move forward with ‘culture of sycophancy’: Ramachandran

Strong points

  • Ramachandran has spoken out strongly against the ‘culture of sycophancy’ in Congress
  • Ramachandran was an MP for seven terms and Chairman of the Kerala Unit of Congress

Congress leader and former Union minister Mullappally Ramachandran spoke out forcefully on Sunday against the “culture of sycophancy” within the party. Speaking to a party program in Kannur, he said unnecessary sycophancy and praise from the leadership will not move the party forward, and the cadres are discouraged after the blows the party received in the five-state elections .

Ramachandran, who served as an MP for seven terms and chairman of the Kerala Unit of Congress, also said there must be platforms within the party where leaders can air their views openly and without fear. He said that internal party criticism is necessary for the growth of the party and to revive the morale of the cadres.

He called on party leaders not only to entertain those who praise them, but also to promote constructive criticism for the party’s best prospects. He said the party must distance itself from those who resort to unnecessary worship of leaders and must instead promote those who give their independent observations on the basic problems plaguing society.

A political party can only move forward through corrective action and Congress must resort to proper introspection and take action by which it moves forward, he added. Noted for his strong views and clean image, Ramachandran’s outburst is taken seriously by party cadres and leaders.
