NEW DELHI: Great drama unfolded during the nearly seven-hour Congress working committee meeting, which finally decided that Sonia Gandhi would continue as acting party leader until a new chair be elected and that the next meeting be convened in six months.
The meeting came as more than 20 party leaders wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi demanding an immediate organizational overhaul and collective leadership in Congress.
Rahul Gandhi targeting dissidents during the CWC meeting also drew reactions from various leaders.
Here is who said what on the matter:
Congress Leader Amarinder Singh: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has welcomed the unanimous resolution passed by the Congress Working Committee (CWC) asking Sonia Gandhi to continue as Acting Chief until the next AICC session.
The Chief Minister, in a statement, said he agreed with party leader P Chidambaram that the next AICC session should be convened at the earliest, possibly within the next six months, to elect the new president.
Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan: Congress was in a ‘pathetic’ situation and most of its leaders were waiting for a call to join the BJP, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, mocking the party during the debate in the assembly of the ‘state on a motion of censure moved by her against her government.
Congress was unable to elect its leader as seniors described themselves as “agents of the BJP”, he said and asserted that most leaders were waiting for a call from the BJP to join.
BJP General Secretary Bhupender Yadav: The BJP has targeted Rahul Gandhi for his alleged remarks that the letter from more than 20 Congress leaders demanding changes in the organization will help the ruling party, saying he is “obsessed” with the saffron party and that “Destruction is near when you stop using your own mind”.
“Rahul Gandhi is so obsessed with the BJP that he begins to see veteran Congress leaders as those who work in ‘collusion’ with the BJP. ‘use your own mind,’ BJP General Secretary Bhupender said. Yadav said.
Chief of Congress Kapil Sibal: The Congress leader took down his tweet targeting Rahul Gandhi and said the former party leader informed him personally that he never made the remark of “colluding with the BJP”.
Sibal is one of 23 party leaders who have written to Sonia Gandhi asking for “full-time” leadership, active on the ground and “visible” in party offices.
Congressman Randeep Singh Surjewala: Minutes after Kapil Sibal raised concerns over Rahul Gandhi’s ‘collusion with the BJP’ remarks, party leader Randeep Singh Surjewala clarified that the former Congress chief had not said a word of that nature , nor hinted at this and asked the former cabinet minister not to be deceived.
“Rahul Gandhi did not say a word of this nature or allude to it. Do not be misled by false media talk or the spread of false information. But yes, we must all work together to fight the rule Modi’s draconianism rather than fighting and harming himself and Congress,” Surjewala tweeted, quoting a tweet from senior Congress official Kapil Sibal.
BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan: Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the high command of the Congress party does not have the courage to hear the truth. He said that if someone disagrees with them, they think they are “traitors”.
“Many Congress leaders wrote a letter to Madam Sonia Gandhi demanding a full time party leader, so Yuvraj got angry and said they all colluded with the BJP. Is Kapil Sibal colluding with the BJP? Is Gulam Nabi Azad colluding with the BJP? and the high command don’t have the courage to listen to the truth. If someone opposes something, they can’t tolerate it and call them traitors.
Asaduddin Owaisi: AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi attacked Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday, saying his own party leader Rahul Gandhi accused him of supporting the BJP.
Speaking to ANI, Owaisi said, “Ghulam Nabi Azad accuses me of working for the BJP. However, today the former chairman of his party is questioning him himself. Ghulam Nabi Azad Saheb, who has belonged to the Congress party for 45 years, when he comes to Hyderabad accuses me and my party that we support the BJP.”
BJP leader Uma Bharti: The existence of the Gandhi-Nehru family is over and their political dominance is over, BJP leader Uma Bharti has said. Speaking to reporters, Bharti said, “The existence of the Gandhi-Nehru family is over, their political dominance is over. The existence of Congress is over. So who stays in what position doesn’t matter now.”
