Senior congressional brass began deliberations Saturday morning on key issues including organizational elections, upcoming Assembly polls and the current political situation in the first physical meeting of the party’s working committee since the coronavirus outbreak. Covid.

Party Chair Sonia Gandhi, former leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress Chief Ministers Ashok Gehlot of Rajasthan, Bhupesh Baghel of Chhattisgarh and Charanjit Channi of Punjab attended the meeting.

Senior leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma were among those present at the meeting at the AICC headquarters here.

The meeting of the party’s main decision-making body – the Congressional Working Committee (CWC) – was convened after requests from some quarters to discuss important issues, including some defections in the recent past.

The meeting also comes amid rumblings within state units of Congress, such as in Punjab, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, where the party is in power.

G-23 leaders had demanded to convene the CWC with Kapil Sibal last month and wondered who in the party was making the decisions in the absence of a full-time chairman. He asserted that the grouping of G23 leaders is “not a Jee Huzur 23”.

Former Rajya Sabha opposition leader Ghulam Nabi Azad had also written to the Congress speaker calling for a CWC meeting at the earliest.

During the meeting, the party leadership will likely decide on the timeline for electing the new Congress leader.

Congress, at its CWC meeting held on January 22, had decided that it would have an elected president by June 2021. But it was postponed at the CWC meeting on May 10 due to the COVID situation. -19.

The latest meeting comes in the wake of the October 3 Lakhimpur Kheri violence in which eight people lost their lives. Among the dead were four farmers who were reportedly run over by an SUV belonging to Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Kumar Mishra’s convoy.

Mishra’s son, Ashish Mishra, who was named in an FIR, was arrested by Uttar Pradesh police on Saturday in connection with the mowing down of the four farmers. The incident gave the Congress party enough ammunition to corner the BJP government and regain lost political space.

The meeting is also expected to discuss key issues such as rising prices, farmer protests and the country’s economic situation.

The CWC meeting will also discuss some dissenting notes that are rising within the party in the face of the wave of defections and the party’s electoral misfortune.

Sonia Gandhi took over as interim president of Congress in August 2019 after Rahul Gandhi resigned following the Lok Sabha party debacle in May 2019.

There have been demands from part of the Congress leadership to have a full-time active party chairman as well as an organizational overhaul.

The demand became intense after a storm in the party in August last year following a letter to Sonia Gandhi by a group of 23 leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Bhupinder Hooda, Prithviraj Chavan, Kapil Sibal, Manish Tewari and Mukul Wasnik raising these issues.
