New Delhi [India]Mar 10 (ANI): With Congress faring badly in five states – Manipur, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Goa and Punjab according to the current trends in Assembly election results, the party has decided to convene a meeting of the Congress’s working committee to introspect the results, Congress General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala said Thursday.
“The results of 5 states went against the expectations of the Congress party, but we accept that we did not get the blessing of the people. Sonia Gandhi has decided to call a meeting of the Congress working committee soon to look at the results,” Surjewala said addressing a Delhi press conference.
Reacting to the trends in the poll results, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said he humbly accepted the people’s verdict, adding that the party would learn from it.
“Humbly accept the verdict of the people. Best wishes to those who won the mandate. My gratitude to all Congress workers and volunteers for their hard work and dedication. We will learn from this and continue to work for the interests of the people Indian,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.
The election results were a further shock to the Congress which was unable to retain Punjab or gain power in Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur where it was the BJP’s main rival.
According to polling trends as of 3 p.m., the BJP won three seats and leads with 243 seats in Uttar Pradesh’s 403-member assembly. The Samajwadi Party is in the lead with 120 seats, the BSP with one seat and the Congress with two. BJP ally Apna Dal (Soneylal) leads with 11 seats and its other allied party NISHAD with seven seats.
The RLD, an ally of the Samajwadi party, is in the lead with 10 seats and the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj party with 4 seats.
In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi party is on track to achieve a three-quarters majority after winning 37 seats and leads with 54 seats in 117 member assemblies. Congress has won four seats and is leading on 15, SAD has won one seat and is leading on two seats, BJP has won one seat and is leading on another and BSP is leading on one seat.
In Uttarakhand’s 70-member assembly, where exit polls had predicted a close race, the BJP leads with 48 seats, Congress has one seat and leads with 17, BSP is in the lead with two seats and the independents on two seats. No party has retained power in Uttarakhand since the establishment of the hill state.
In Goa, where forecasts called for a suspended assembly, the BJP won eight seats and leads by 12 seats, the Congress won four seats and leads by seven, the Goa Forward Party leads with one seat and the party Aam Aadmi won one seat and is leading by one seat. The independents won two seats and lead with one. The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak party leads with two seats and Goans Revolutionaries lead with one seat in the 40 member state assembly.
In Manipur, where the tendencies are available for 46 out of 60 seats, BJP won 10 seats and leads by 12 seats, Congress won two seats and leads by one seat, JD-U won three seats and leads in three, National People’s Party won two seats and leads with four seats, Kuki People’s Alliance leads with one seat and Naga People’s Front leads with five seats. Independents won two seats and lead with one seat. (ANI)
