KATHMANDU, December 20: The faction led by Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has won the majority in the Nepali Congress (NC) central committee in the open category.

According to the vote tally held on Sunday at CN’s 14th General Convention, 25 leaders of the Deuba faction were elected core members. Of the total 35 CWC members in the open category, only 10 leaders from other groups secured their seats.

According to final results released Sunday by the NC Election Committee, there are 16 new faces on the 35-member open central committee. Leaders of the Nepal Students’ Union and Nepal Tarun Dal, including current and former presidents, have become central members of the party. A total of 19 leaders were re-elected to the Central Working Committee.

The party’s outgoing general secretary, Shashank Koirala won the highest number of votes among the leaders who were re-elected to the Central Committee. He received 3,836 votes. His name was on the panel of the Deuba and Shekhar Koirala groups

Similarly, NP Saud, Bal Krishna Khand, Udaya Shamsher Rana, Ram Hari Khatiwada, Ramesh Lekhak, Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, Shankar Bhandari, Jipchhiring Lama and Arjun Narasimha KC are among the nine other leaders elected as core members with the most votes. Apart from Shashank and KC, all the leaders who have secured their place in the top 10 are leaders close to Deuba.

Likewise, Rana and Khatiwada are the leaders to reach the Central Committee for the first time. Rana who is also the former President of Nepal Tarun Dal got the fourth position and Khatiwada got the fifth position. Khatiwada, who was defeated as a central member at the 13th general convention, was elected from Okhaldhunga in the 2070 Constituent Assembly election.

President of Nepal Tarun Dal Jit Jung Basnet got the 11th position, former President of Nepal Students Union Nain Singh Mahar 15th, former General Secretary of Nepal Students Union Kundan Raj Kafle the 20th and former NSU Vice President Guru Baral the 25th position. Sanjay Kumar Gautam from Bardiya, Govindaraj Pokhrel, former vice chairman of the National Planning Commission and Rajiv Dhungana, chairman of the Nepal Students Union were also elected core members.

Dinesh Koirala who missed the chance to be Mayor of Metropolitan City of Bharatpur, Madan Bahadur Amatya, Nepal Press Union General Secretary Ajay Babu Shiwakoti and former Student Union General Secretary from Nepal, Umesh Jung Rayamajhi were also elected core members for the first time.

Ganesh Lama who has a controversial background, Mohan Acharya who was elected as a member of the House of Representatives from Rasuwa and Krishna Kishore Ghimire, a former leader from Dang, were also elected as central members. Ghimire was previously a guest core member.

Although the counting of the votes of the various groups including women core members started from Sunday, it will still take a few days for the results to come in. In the election held for 134 positions including 13 officers, two core members were elected unopposed.

A total of 99 leaders had competed for the position of 35 members of the open central committee of members. So far, the vote count has shown a clear majority in favor of President Deuba. However, there are also leaders close to former General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula.
